This was my husband and I on our wedding day, three years ago. When I look at this picture and I think about is my inability to properly carry a bouquet of flowers. Also about how I gave myself awful bangs a few weeks before and how it took them forever to grow out afterwards. I wonder where that gorgeous striped tie that I bought for my husband wound up. Most importantly, I think of how far we have come in the past three years together and I wonder where we are going to end up three more years from now.
Added To The Things I Love…
Having my morning coffee in my new monogram mug. I have been looking for a big mug for ages and I found one, just in time for temperatures to drop.
Raise the Red Lantern
Over the weekend, I had the privilege of watching Raise the Red Lantern, a cinematographic masterpiece featuring one of my favorite actresses, Gong Li. The film debuted in 1991 (har, har, I was one. That’s embarrassing.)
It is an adaption by Ni Zhen of the 1990 novel Wives and Concubines by Su Tong. The film was later adapted into an acclaimed ballet of the same title by the National Ballet of China, also directed by Zhang.
Set in the 1920s, the film tells the story of a young woman who becomes one of the concubines of a wealthy man during the Warlord Era. It is noted for its opulent visuals and sumptuous use of colours. The film was shot in Qiao’s Compound near the ancient city of Pingyao, in Shanxi Province. Although the screenplay was approved by Chinese censors,[2] the final version of the film was banned in China for a period.[3][4] Some film critics have interpreted the film as a veiled allegory against authoritarianism.[5] - Wikipedia
The entire movie is intense. There are plenty of emotions throughout the whole film. It really divulges into Chinese history and the treatment of women in Chinese culture. The movie put me in the mind of book, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan which had a film interpretation earlier this year. I have yet to see the film version of Snow Flower, but I am very excited to share Raise the Red Lantern with you. If you haven’t watched, I highly recommend it. Gong Li’s performance is near perfection and the movie score alone should fill your heart with emotion.
Friends In Unusual Places
I read this on Not Always Right and thought it would be a great story to share today. Sometimes you never know where you will make friends.
Me: “How can I help you today?”
Customer: “I’m looking for a parcel.”
Me: “May I have your tracking number, please?”
Customer: “My what?”
Me: “Your tracking number. All of our parcels have tracking numbers which the sender can give you if you do not have it.”
Customer: “Why don’t you have it?”
Me: “Because I didn’t send you the parcel.”
Customer: “So, who did then?”
Me: “Sir, do you not know who sent you the item?”
Customer: “No, but my neighbor just had something delivered and I want one too. So send me something now!”
(The caller then muffles the phone and I can hear what sounds like sobs.)
Me: “Sir, are you okay?”
Customer: “I’m so lonely and I just wanted to get a present!” *more sobbing*
Customer: “I’m so lonely!”
Me: *speechless*
Customer: “Never mind, I’ll go now…”
Me: “Sir…wait. We do have a parcel for you. I just need to confirm your address to send it to you. It will be there this afternoon!”
(After he gives me his address, I have a quick whip around the call center and we get a card signed by the team, put in a few chocolate bars with other happy bits and pieces, and send it to him. He calls the next day and thanks us all. Now, he rings once a week on average, and we are all happy to chat with him.)
